Stepping out of my comfort zone, and considering myself a PHOTOGRAPHER!

I volunteer for a dog rescue organization, Great Dog Rescue New England. I have been volunteering with them for about a year. It’s fun, I get to hang out with dogs, and most importantly they are an organization I believe in, so it’s a win win. On Sunday I had signed up to work their annual Walk and Wag event, a 3 mile walk around the lake in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

What does that have to do with considering myself a photographer?

I had initially signed up to help with set up, so I could get there early, and have the rest of Sunday off to myself. But then the photographer for the event was unable to make it and they sent out a message to everyone asking if anyone knew someone who would be willing to take pictures. And well, here I am, trying to grow as a photographer, so why not?

They gave me a list of assignments, things they wanted covered so they could use it next year in promotional materials and then pictures of people and dogs to for social media. So I treated it like I treat my photowalks, little tasks that I want to work on or try to accomplish. And I had a ton of fun. Working an event as the photographer, people want you to take pictures of them, so there is no need for nerves asking someone to take their photo, they are more than happy to pose, vendors and participants alike!

It was a lot of fun, and I was glad that I offered. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I would definitely do it again.
